1/8/2003 - "WHERE SPIRITS SOAR" Greg Mortenson slide show
1 Day Event
Location: UNITARIAN CHURCH DOWNTOWN 1011 SW 12th Avenue, Portland 503228.6389

Details:
Greg Mortenson's inspirational slide show. Update from his recent work and extensive travels in Afghanistan and Pakistan since 9/11.

Greg Mortenson 1993 climb of Pakistan K2 changed his life. His initial promise to build one school has resulted in 28 schools today, with 8,200 children receiving education. A special focus is on girl’s education, which Mortenson feels is imperative to long-term solutions in societies with poverty and despair. For the last decade, Greg, Director of Bozeman nonprofit Central Asia Institute www.ikat.org, has been essentially the only foreigner dedicated fulltime to help the ethnic Balti people of the K2 region.

He has survived relentless intelligence investigations, a 1996 eight day armed kidnapping and candid debates with Islamic scholars in a land of wars, Taliban, Islam, high peaks and uncertainty. Mortenson received American Alpine Club’s prestigious David Brower Conservation award and is an honorary member of American Association of University Women for his efforts to promote girl’s education. Through insightful commentary and stunning photography, Greg shares lessons learned that make his girls’ education and community-based programs successful.
