6/28/2003 - PUT A PASSAGES NORTHWEST GIRL and A GIRL IN NEED ON THE SUMMIT OF RAINIER! Event Location: Washington
Details: Yep, you guessed it...I'm climbing Mt. Rainier for Passages Northwest
(www.passagesnw.org). I have been invited on a climb with the Chris Hooyman
Memorial Fund, which has been a long time supporter of Girls Rock! (the
mentorship program for inner city girls that I founded in Seattle, WA). As
the Board President of Passages Northwest any dollars I raise for the climb
go directly to girls and women in need. The mission of Passages Northwest is
to educate and motivate girls and women to develop leadership and courage
through the integrated exploration of the arts and the natural environment.
For more information on Passages Northwest, please see our website:
www.passagesnw.org.
In addition to my climb, I'm also hoping to put the FIRST girl from Passages
Northwest on the summit of this 14,410 ft. mountain. She is a foster child
who's life has been forever changed due to her early participation in Girls
Rock! She has taken a Passages program every year for the last four years
and she has received scholarships to both Outward Bound and NOLS programs.
She is ready for this bigger challenge, and with your help, we'll make it to
the top! It would mean a lot to her and a lot to me to have your support as
we make this climb of courage.
To contribute to our climb and this wonderful cause, please send donations
by JUNE 27th (we start the climb on JUNE 28th). Donations to be sent care of
the Chris Hooyman Memorial Fund to:
Chris Hooyman Fund
Seattle Foundation
425 Pike St., Suite 510
Seattle, WA 98101
Any contributions are appreciated, from $5 to $500! I need to raise at least
$1000 to go on the climb! Please let me know (by sending me an email) if you
have sent in a donation so that I can acknowledge you in a special way at
the summit! (I'll send you a photo and a special memory to thank you for
your contribution).
I Know Courage
I know courage,
Going to a place I’ve never been to before,
With people I don’t know,
Being the first one to walk up and say…”hi.”
I know courage,
Standing up for myself, my opinion,
Overcoming fear and never giving up,
Finally admitting to myself
That I’m not ready.
I know courage,
Trying over and over again
At the same handholds
Until my fingers bleed,
The endless rock above me,
The long drop below,
“I can’t do it!
It’s too hard,
Hey…I did it…”
I know courage,
The supporting “you go girl”
From below me as I fall,
Time after time.
The warm feeling inside me
When I look down on a finished climb,
Self-confidence.
I know courage,
Enduring pain,
Fear,
Frustration,
Falling, trying again,
And finally completing the climb that
Before I started, looked impossible.
I know courage.
