Insurance and Permits Outside the United States

In non-UIAGM countries it is hard to generalize about the situation regarding permits. Sometimes they are required and sometimes not, and many times when required this is not enforced. In any case, you may want to ask your guide about permit requirements, if you are interested or concerned. As a consumer the most likely impact it might have on you is the possibility that lack of the proper permit may invalidate your outfitter's liability insurance, though, again, the possibility of your trip being interrupted may also exist.

Bottom line for the consumer regarding permits overseas:
In UIAGM countries outside the U.S. (Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Austria, Peru, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, or Spain), you can know that your UIAGM certified guide has any necessary permits, otherwise they would not be allowed to guide. Your non-UIAGM guide may be guiding without permission, in some areas. In this case, and in that of non-UIAGM countries, you may have to do some research if you really want to be sure your guide has necessary permits. This could effect the guide's liability insurance company's coverage of the activity, or possibly put the trip at risk of being cancelled or interrupted.

In UIAGM-member countries aside from the U.S., one of the requirements of a guide's certification is typically that they hold liability insurance for their clients. The amount of coverage required varies from one country to another, and is usually about the same as or higher than that required by U.S. land management agencies. In general you can be assured that they are covered if they are certified.

In non-UIAGM countries aside from the U.S. you may want to ask about insurance requirements and whether or not your outfitter has any insurance.

Bottom line for the consumer regarding insurance overseas:
In UIAGM countries besides the US (Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Austria, Peru, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, or Spain), the UIAGM certified guide will almost certainly have liability insurance comparable to that in the U.S. In other countries, or with a non-UIAGM guide overseas, you may want to ask about liability insurance coverage for the area in question.
