This feature article was snagged from Questions to Ask a
Guide or Guide Service - Ask the guide service who will be your guide! They should
be able to tell you who will be leading your trip or climb, or
at least give you a short list of those among whom they will
choose, as scheduling or other variables may dictate
flexibility until the last minute. - Ask the guide if they have permits for the area in which
you will be climbing (not necessary with UIAGM guides in UIAGM
countries outside the U.S.) - Ask the guide if they have liability insurance to cover
the activity and the area (not necessary with UIAGM guides in
UIAGM countries outside the U.S.) - Ask guides in the United States if they are AMGA
certified in the activity you will be doing with them - Ask the guide if they are UIAGM certified when your trip
or climb will be in a UIAGM member country (Germany, France,
the UK, Italy, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Austria,
Peru, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, or Spain), and
if not, ask whether this is required in the area where you
will be climbing. - If your guide is not certified (or perhaps even if they
are, depending on your interest), ask them, their employer or
another guide you trust, about their training and experience,
about their company's training policies or programs, how long
they have been in business, any incidents or accidents in
their history. How deeply you delve into all of this depends
on how much energy or concern you have, and with how well
known or documented their business is. |
